Nation’s Largest Christmas Tree

This year Las Vegas is home to the tallest Christmas tree in the United States. That’s taller than the one at Rockefeller Center in New York and even the one on display on the national mall in Washington DC.

The M Resort is displaying a 109′ tall tree – the tallest cut tree in the country. We’re planning to go visit later this week to see it for ourselves.

Tiesto performs this weekend

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the summer tourist season in Las Vegas. It is a big weekend for the clubs with all major pool parties already open and big name DJs headlining at night. DJ Tiesto is playing at Jet this Sunday and at Bank on Monday.

ABBA has left the building

Last night was Mamma Mia!s last show at Mandalay Bay. The show ran for six years, over 2,200 performances and 2 million audience members. That’s a whole lotta Dancing Queen. Things must have really slowed down towards the end because we received fliers here advertising 50% off tickets for locals.

The Lion King replaces Mamma Mia! starting in early May.

MJ in Pahrump?

Get More Stimulus for Your Package

The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that some brothels are offering creative incentives: gas cards. Spend a certain amount of your tax rebate check and get more “bang” for your buck.

Remember that prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas so would-be patrons need to drive as far as 150 miles each way to visit a brothel. Gas cards are a way to offset the rising price of fuel and to lure visitors out of Clark County.

Red Rock Canyon

Believe it or not, there’s more to Las Vegas than hotels and casinos. Just a few minutes west of the madness is Red Rock Canyon. I took my uncle there this weekend. We spent about an hour and a half driving slowly through the park on the 13 mile scenic loop stopping often to take photos.

The cost of admission is $5 per vehicle or $20 for an annual pass.

Exploration Park

One of the perks of living near a master-planned community but not in a master-planned community is that you get to enjoy amenities like a neighborhood park without having to pay hefty association dues. Exploration Park was built by Focus Property group as a community center for Mountain’s Edge residents but I get to enjoy it too.

The park features several play areas for children based on their age. One is modeled after an Old West town but scaled down and kid-sized. There are volleyball and basketball courts and large fields of grass where dogs and soccer players run freely. The coolest attraction has to be the trails that wind up and down the large peak that dominates the park. It’s a challenging hike to the top but you are rewarded with views of the entire Vegas valley if you make it.

Exploration Park is located on Buffalo Drive just south of Blue Diamond Road and directly across from the Mountain’s Edge Visitors’ Center. Read more about the park in the LVRJ.
